Climate Mayors Applaud Congressional Passage of 21st Century Road to Housing Act

Boise, ID (June 24, 2026) – Climate Mayors Chair, Mayor Lauren McLean of Boise, ID, issued the following statement in response to Congress’ passage of the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, a landmark measure that will streamline housing approvals, expand affordable housing funding, and equip cities to modernize zoning and build energy‑efficient homes for families nationwide.

“From Boise to Miami, the 21st Century Road to Housing Act ensures that mayors have the tools and resources to build safe and efficient housing, reduce delays to building more housing supply, and bring down housing costs that are making it harder for American families to afford a home,” said Climate Mayors Chair, Boise Mayor Lauren McLean.

This legislation is a win for working families everywhere: it launches the PRICE Manufactured Housing Grant Program to weatherize homes and cut energy costs, and creates new homeownership pathways. With a five‑year affordable housing grant program to modernize zoning and housing strategies, cities can unlock middle housing and transit‑oriented development that make communities more affordable, connected, and sustainable. While it sunsets the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program in three years, Climate Mayors urges Congress to find other ways to continue support for this program’s outcomes that local governments rely on.

By removing unnecessary barriers and investing in smarter housing strategies, Congress has given cities a real chance to meet the urgent need for affordable homes while advancing our climate goals.
