STATEMENT: Boise Mayor and Climate Mayors Chair Lauren McLean on Congress’ Proposed EV and Hybrid Vehicle Tax

Boise, ID (May 17, 2026) - Boise Mayor and Climate Mayors Chair, Lauren McLean today issued the following statement in response to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s proposal for an unprecedented new annual fee on electric and hybrid vehicles included in the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Bill:

“Boiseans and residents across the country are feeling the rising costs of everyday life. For many working families, every dollar matters right now. One of the clearest line items rising for household budgets is fuel price, and when prices rise, families take a closer look on long term costs.

Choosing an EV is not a partisan act—it's a practical one. It’s about finding reliable transportation that helps lower monthly expenses and creates a little more breathing room in the budget. It’s about making a decision that is right for each family on how to safely and efficiently get to school, work, and run errands every day.

We all agree that maintaining roads and infrastructure is important, and everyone should contribute fairly. But proposals that place additional fees on hybrid and electric vehicle owners risk putting a disproportionate burden on families who are simply trying to save money and adapt to rising costs.

A commuter driving to work each day, or a parent shuttling kids between school, practices, and appointments, should not be penalized for choosing a vehicle that helps reduce fuel expenses. At a time when affordability remains a top concern for families, we should be focused on solutions that support financial stability — not policies that make it harder for households to get ahead or even stay afloat.

I encourage members of Congress to work together on a long-term transportation funding solution that is balanced, sustainable, and mindful of the economic pressures families are facing today. Everyday Boise residents, like Americans everywhere, are looking for practical solutions that help make the math work at home.“
